Five
A grand marquis built the structure for his love who was also
from a family of substantial wealth. Together they lived in their
grand house, moving back and forth from Veradero, until news came
that the marquis was bankrupt, and soon after he died. Upon hearing
the news of bankruptcy the house butler hung himself in a downstairs
bedroom. The mistress of the house was forced to sell her beloved
home.
A wealthy Mexican man bought the house and converted it into
a prestigious private boy’s school. After the Cuban Revolution
the school was nationalized and served as a public school for
37 years until it was closed due to poor upkeep. For the past
five years the house has been abandoned except for the guards
stationed in the gardener’s quarters in front of the building,
and the butler’s ghost, which is said to inhabit the downstairs
bedroom.
It could be a romantic story except for the people who remember
it as it was, and the neighboring buildings who have their own
story but are just as neglected.
