One of the buildings I photographed is both an apartment building
and a factory that manufactures bras under the brand name, Ritmo,
or Rhythm. Originally the building belonged to the factory owners.
The apartments were meant for people who worked in the building.
After the revolution the factory was nationalized but continues
to function to this day.
The steps are made with bits of glass and gravel. When you reach
the apartments water stains run down the walls. A large skylight
in the lobby of the building is broken, many windowpanes are missing,
and remaining windows are cracked. The doors at the main entrance
do not open or close properly; several walls have been created
out of glass and metal or are covered with cardboard, and the
stairs are broken or missing. When I asked if I could take pictures
in the factory I was told to leave. I did talk to a woman who
lived in the building. She had a one-bedroom apartment, which
had, a t one point, served as a home for seven people. When I
asked the woman if she would like to move she said, “I don’t
think any other house would suit me but this one.”
What she didn’t say was that she has no choice.
