This is a most unusual piece about something rather obscure. It is written with a subtle and engaging wit. The author clearly depicts the setting, the hawks and their owner. He also does this, somehow, without allowing the prose to overflow into sentimental swooning over the natural world, the relationship between man and beast. He manages to draw the reader in, despite the lack of action all throughout; it is enough to imagine the birds in all their rare glory, and the man who has devoted himself to handling them. The dialogue really helps to set the pace, and serves to actively shape the 'characters'. The included illustrations really add to the texture of the story.
